5 reasons to save water
According to the world economic forum, water scarcity is one of the five global risks and already affects a quarter of the world's population (1). There are many reasons why each individual should conserve this precious resource.
Did You Know...
…that an average EU citizen has a water consumption of 5011 liters per day?
Of these 5011 liters, only 23 liters are used for tasks within the household. The rest of the water footprint goes into daily food consumption and energy use. And this consumption increases steadily as income rises.
And Did You Know...
…that only 2.5% of the earth’s water supply is fresh water, while 97.5% is salt water? Out of that 2.5% fresh water, only 0.3% is easily accessible. The rest is partially captured in polar ice and hard to reach.
In itself, there is enough drinking water for all people on Earth. However, an uneven distribution of water is causing water scarcity for half a billion people. This water scarcity, the imbalance between supply and demand in freshwater resources, must be taken very seriously. Due to climate change and an increasing demand for water, water scarcity is expected to increase. It is a worrying issue generally, as it also can disrupt energy supplies to households and businesses.
Unfortunately, people often underestimate their power in saving water, because they don't see that it affects them personally. But it does.
So, shouldn’t we all try to save water?
Here are 5 reasons why saving water affects you and your local surroundings in a positive way:
1. Saving water means saving energy
A large part of consumed drinking water is heated beforehand. In addition, water used for showering, bathing and cleaning is also heated. This heating process is energy-intensive, which means that saving hot water saves energy and money.
And this doesn't just apply to your home. Energy is also consumed in the pumping and purification of water before it reaches the house. So saving water in general can save even more emissions.
2. Waste water pollutes the environment
Pollutants are often flushed into the environment with waste water. Therefore, it is also important not to flush chemical waste down the toilet or drain.
3. We take away water from the plants and damage the soil
A third reason for saving water is that our extensive water consumption takes water away from plants. That causes them to wither and damages the natural balance of the soil.
4. Products consume much more water than we think
The fourth reason to save water does not relate to our personal water consumption. Instead, it reflects our indirect use of water through our consumption of products. Take the water bottle as an example. The production of a one-liter bottle itself requires seven liters of water! Therefore, by drinking tap water, you not only save water, you also reduce the CO2 emissions that would result from bottle production. And if you don’t want to use unfiltered tap water, GROHE Blue offers a good alternative. It allows you to turn your tap water into chilled, filtered, still, medium or sparkling water - all from one single faucet.
5. Saving water means saving money
With this fifth and final reason, the principle is simple. The less water you use, the less you have to pay at the end of the month. Saving water for a couple of months can therefore already save you a lot of money!
Have you ever heard of “virtual water”?
Most of our water consumption is based on certain goods that we import. This is so-called virtual water, which is invisible to us as consumers. More specifically, virtual water is the water that is used during the production and transportation of products. Therefore, making conscious choices about the goods we buy has a big impact as well.
But what else can we do to save water? And what solution does GROHE offer?
Luckily, there are many simple things we can do to prevent water waste. We can start saving water by making smart choices at home. In Germany, for example, most water is used for bathing, showering and personal hygiene, followed by flushing the toilet.
Simply by turning off the tap when brushing our teeth, refraining from long showers, and doing laundry only when necessary, we can save a lot of water.
GROHE EcoJoy is an example of smart technology that resolves the water waste issue. All GROHE EcoJoy products are consistently designed to save water and energy and thus to conserve valuable resources. Its built-in special mousseur limits the flow and reduces water consumption by up to 50 percent without compromising on the full water experience. An aerator ensures the same volume perception as with conventional faucets.
